Elpitiya Plantations Advances Sustainable Education through Collaboration with Aitken Spence and the Sri Lanka Air Force on “Clean Today – Green Tomorrow

October 22, 2025

Elpitiya Plantations PLC has joined hands with the Aitken Spence & Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) as the Agricultural knowledge provider for the “Clean Today – Green Tomorrow” initiative; an environmental sustainability programme launched by the SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit to commemorate World Environment Day. The project, initiated through a partnership between Aitken Spence PLC and the SLAF, aims to instil sustainable values, enhance environmental literacy, and inspire practical action across Air Force camps and surrounding communities.

As the technical collaborator, Elpitiya Plantations plays a central role in facilitating knowledge-sharing and exposure on sustainable agricultural practices. A series of educational visits were organised at the New Peacock, Dunsinane, and Meddecombra Estates, providing SLAF participants with firsthand experience of sustainable plantation management. The sessions included demonstrations on Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping, drone-assisted monitoring, tissue culture propagation, and mechanised tea processing; all guided by Elpitiya’s expert agricultural and engineering professionals.

In addition to technical learning, participants also experienced how Elpitiya integrates community wellbeing into its sustainability model. The programme concluded with a visit to the Meddecombra Elders’ Home, highlighting that sustainability is not only about environmental performance but also about compassion and shared growth with neighbouring communities. Inspired by the visit, several SLAF camps have already expressed interest in initiating energy conservation and drone-based precision agriculture projects within their premises.

The initiative aligns closely with our dedicated United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Quality Education (SDG 4), Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), and Life on Land (SDG 15), while exemplifying the power of Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17).

Running over a period of five to six months, “Clean Today – Green Tomorrow” will culminate in a recognition ceremony celebrating the most impactful environmental projects from SLAF camps. Through its continued engagement, Elpitiya Plantations reaffirms its commitment to advancing sustainable education and empowering institutions and communities to build a greener, more responsible future.
