Dunsinane Estate has been granted Rs. 1.41 Mn by the National Aquatic Development Authority of Sri Lanka, for construction of 05 Cluster Based Food Fish Pond Culture.
These tanks are to be constructed adjacent to natural springs and in water logged areas.
This project was initiated by the Manager Dunsinane Estate, Mr.Asela Udumulla, the Asst. Director – Extension Zone, Provincial Aquaculture Extension Office, Kandy Mr.E.S.Wickramasinghe and Mr.A.I.B.Agalawatte, the Senior Asst. Manager of Dunsinane Estate.
The welfare staff and beneficiary workers have been sent to the Kalawewa Training Center of NAQDA for an in-house training on inland fisheries cultivation as the first step of the project and the construction of the ponds area now in progress.
Objectives of this project are,
- To increase rain water harvesting and to improve water tables of the estate.
- To supplement additional protein to the estate population for their diet as reach to quality sea food is rare in the area.
- To increase the income of workers trough additional income.
- To convert areas with health hazards effectively, such as mosquito breeding sites, as inland fisheries tanks
